Field Foreman

Summary

Plan, assign, lead, and train an effective manufacturing organization to build commercial structural steel framework and customized processing equipment efficiently, and perform the scope of contracted work within the planned budget and time line.

Qualifications

  • This candidate should have a valid Basics of Supervising certificate from an approved training  provider. 
  • This candidate must have knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • This candidate must have knowledge of the applicable Regulations (i.e. Construction Projects  Regulations 213) 
  • This candidate must be deemed a “competent person” according to the Occupational Health &  Safety Act: 
    • is qualified because of knowledge, training and experience to organize the work and its  performance, 
    • is familiar with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Regulations that apply to  the work, and 
    • has knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace.
  • This candidate must be a proven leader in the field of structural steel and mechanical installation.
  • This candidate must possess a valid driver license. 

Experience

  • Candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience of successfully managing
    commercial manufacturing projects exceeding $100,000 in value that finished on time and under
    budget.
  • Candidate must have experience in heavy rigging and hoisting.
  • Candidate must have experience coordinating the installation of structural steel framing systems.

Knowledge

  • Candidate must be able to read, interrupt, and understand architectural plan and elevation
    drawings, as well as detail design drawings.
  • Candidate must have knowledge of and understand the industrial manufacturing process.
  • Candidate must be computer literate and must be able to forecast weekly job percentage
    complete as well as the estimated date of job completion.

Abilities

  • Candidate must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Candidate must be able to measure, track, and report job progress schedules.
  • Candidate must be able to select job subcontracted services.
  • Candidate must be able to schedule multiple jobs simultaneously for steel fabrication.
  • Candidate must be fluent in English. The abilities to speak, read, and write any other languages
    are preferred.

Physical Demands

Authority

  • Assign jobs from site mobilization to de-mobilization for each project.
  • Manage subcontracted services to support any project schedule.
  • Price and submit contract change orders for customer-requested work outside the contract scope
    of work.
  • Represent the company at scheduled contractor meetings.

Accountability

  • Continuously improve shop productivity.
  • Continuously improve quality and strive for “zero” scrap and re-work expenses.
  • Bring jobs to conclusion for less than the budget estimated cost.

Responsibility

  • Update the staff, as needed, but at a minimum of once per week, of any expected job cost
    overruns and/or delays.
  • Update the staff, as needed, but a minimum of once each week, of the billable hours worked for
    each field employee.
  • Maintain good relations with customers, vendors, sub-contractors, and other employees.

Essential Duties & Tasks

  • Contribute to improved employee morale
  • Visit jobsites and make cost estimates for change orders.
  • Communicate all sales leads to the President.
  • Lead and conduct on-the-job skill training to minimize project “call-backs”.
  • Review job progress and report to the staff for all active jobs.
  • Make and modify job schedules and staffing requirements, as needed, and communicate changes
    to the President.
  • Ensure billable hours are properly documented and reported by each employee.
  • Ensure all work is properly setup and planned.
  • Ensure clean and organized work spaces.
  • Review performance and conduct performance interviews for all field employees.
  • Lead “tailgate” safety meetings.
  • Attend contractor site meetings as a company representative, when needed.
  • Attend and contribute to the weekly staff accountability meetings.
  • Participate in all project “Post Mortem” job cost analyses.
  • Inspect the jobsite regularly for scope of work compliance, quality workmanship, and safety
    policy rules compliance.
  • Follow-up on any warranty work and maintain contact with the President to insure customer
    satisfaction.
  • Maintain company vehicles.
  • Follow and enforce company policies and procedures.
  • Project a positive company image.
  • Perform any other duties or tasks assigned by the President.

Measures of Performance

  • Manage each job to complete in less than the estimated labour hours.
  • Manage each job to complete on or before the scheduled completion date.
  • Manage each job to complete under the purchased material cost budget.
  • Keep call backs to repair faulty workmanship to a minimum.
